Turning deep technology into category defining companies

Let’s make a name.

On technology, companies & categories

Most companies compete inside a category. A lucky few start one. The rarest and best become the name for it.

That transformation is what Eponym & Co exists to serve. I work with people combining the newest ideas and most advanced technology to build category-defining companies.

The conviction underneath the work is old and simple: new ways of doing things are the only durable engine of human progress. Technology that converts effort and energy into outputs which did not exist before is what advances society's growth in both knowledge and abundance.

A new category is one of those new ways made legible. It is a fresh concept of value that, once established, flows outward and compounds. It runs back into older industries and across into adjacent ones, seeding advances no one planned. I call this a tide of happy accidents. The automobile was a century old before computing and satellite navigation flowed into it and remade what it could be. Twenty years later, mobile devices and computer vision put us at the precipice of autonomous vehicles. That outward, round trip, and compounding flow — not the initial invention alone — is where prosperity best blossoms.

Most technology never travels that far. Compelling ideas stall at demonstration and strong products settle into comfortable obscurity if no one builds the bridge between what the technology is and what the market can name. My work is to build that bridge with you. Then, when the moment is right, to name the new thing your company has made: to define the category and its vocabulary.

This is unglamorous in the near term and enormous in the long. It asks for hard conversations, real operational work, and the patience to think in years. It means caring less about capturing the last increment of a settled market than about helping a genuinely new one come into being. A small share of something vast is worth more, and asks far less of the world, than a large share of something small.

The name is the aspiration. An eponym is the source of a new name. The companies worth building are the ones that become the name for what they made.
